A common symptom of a yeast infection in women is vaginal discharge. This discharge generally has the consistency and color--thick and whitish/yellowish--of cottage cheese. Also take note of the smell, which may be sour, starchy, or completely absent in some cases.

One of the biggest problems with yeast infections in men is that they do not experience this discharge, in fact they generally experience no symptoms at all and so they can wind up having a yeast infection for weeks even months and not even know it.

Another symptom of a yeast infection in women is burning or itching in the vaginal area, especially immediately after urination. Consequentially, many women mistakenly identify the ailment as a urinary tract infection. In order to differentiate between a UTI and a yeast infection, isolate the source of the pain. If urination is painful, then it is UTI, as the pain is inside the body. if the outer part of the vagina burns, then it is a yeast infection.

Painful sexual intercourse is another of the telltale symptom of a yeast infections, and this is also one of the most problematic because if you are not aware that you have a yeast infection and you are having sexual intercourse, then you are passing the infection on. This happens a lot of the time, because it usually takes a while for most people to even have a clue that they actually have a yeast infection.
